Following Argentina's victory over Cape Verde, Lionel Messi addressed journalist Sofi Martínez in the mixed zone, playfully putting an end to rumors of a supposed romantic interest and an alleged ban on speaking with her.

Upon encountering the reporter in the mixed zone, the Argentine captain didn't hesitate to comment on the circulating rumors. "Then they say I don't greet you, whether I look at you or not. If I look at you, it's because I'm looking; if I greet you, it's because I'm greeting you," Messi stated, indirectly referencing the speculations that have emerged in recent years.

The controversy dates back to a 2022 World Cup interview after Argentina qualified for the final. The way Messi looked at Martínez as she delivered an emotional message went viral, sparking rumors of a supposed romantic interest. During the 2026 World Cup, the controversy reignited with reports that Antonela Roccuzzo, Messi's wife, was bothered, leading some players to allegedly avoid interviews with the journalist.

Despite Sofi Martínez herself having already debunked the rumors, Messi's gesture served to reinforce that there are no issues. The journalist attempted to change the subject, saying, "Let's get to what we enjoy most, which is our work." However, she acknowledged the significance of the moment and thanked the player: "Thank you, I really appreciate it."

Martínez later commented on the incident, explaining that it was all due to "noise that sometimes gets generated during the week and makes no sense." She added, "He doesn't have to clarify anything, and yet he did so to make it clear that there's no problem."

In December 2023, the journalist had already publicly addressed the situation, stating she felt "ridiculous for having to come out publicly to clarify this." In April of this year, she revealed that Antonela Roccuzzo herself contacted her to reassure her, sending a message that read: "Sofi, don't worry... Don't pay attention to nonsense." Martínez emphasized the importance of this gesture, highlighting that Roccuzzo "had no need whatsoever" to do so.
