Mercedes driver George Russell is set to receive a new power unit for the Singapore Grand Prix, triggering a back-of-the-grid penalty for the Briton. The news was confirmed by team principal Toto Wolff, although the change is yet to be formally submitted to the FIA.
Russell retired in Malaysia due to an issue that Wolff confirmed was power unit-related, rather than connected to the Safety Car period under which it occurred. Russell could also take another new power unit at the United States Grand Prix if an upgraded, more powerful specification is ready, which would incur further penalties. Alternatively, that second change may be postponed to give him a better opportunity to chip away at teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli's lead.
Following Malaysia, Russell sits 84 points adrift of Antonelli in the championship battle, making his recovery drive even tougher given how notoriously difficult it is to overtake on the tight and twisty Marina Bay Street Circuit.
