Meet Virgil van Dijk's wife: Rike Nooitgedagt prefers staying out of the spotlight and surfaces at World Cup

Virgil van Dijk earned his 100th cap for the Netherlands against Serbia. In the background, one person has been there from the very beginning: Rike Nooitgedagt. While many footballers' partners embrace the limelight, she prefers to keep a low profile. Who is the Netherlands captain's wife?

The pair began dating long before Van Dijk's breakthrough in professional football. Born in Breda like Van Dijk, Nooitgedagt was working in fashion retail at the time. When the defender earned a transfer to Celtic, she left her job and packed her bags to make the move with him to Scotland.

"I loved my work," she revealed. "But I had to give it up to follow my husband wherever his football career took him."

First child

In 2014, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter. Rike was due in September, right around the time Van Dijk received his first call-up for the Netherlands national team and was on the verge of his debut. To ensure he could be present for the birth, the couple opted for an induced delivery. In the end, the defender had to wait until October 2015 to make his official Oranje debut.

Virgil van Dijk's family

The Van Dijk family grew again in 2017—the year they tied the knot—welcoming their second daughter, Jadi, who joined older sister Nila. Although the couple value their privacy and Rike has since set her Instagram account to private, the girls featured in a Nike campaign. In the advert, Van Dijk reflected: "All in all, I'm just a normal guy who loves his family, just like anyone else. We like to relax, unwind, and have fun together."

Rike makes occasional public appearances alongside her husband and has previously shared touching messages online. Captioning a photo of the two, she once wrote: "I love you not only for who you are, but for who I am when I am with you."

Marriage

In keeping with their preference for privacy, they did not turn their wedding into a public spectacle. In fact, Dutch outlet Story reported that the ceremony was held in complete secrecy. The magazine discovered they were married after land registry records showed the couple had purchased a canal house in Amsterdam as husband and wife.

She never refers to herself publicly as 'Rike van Dijk', opting instead for 'Rike Nooitgedagt'. Story offered an explanation: "Rike still uses her maiden name, most likely because Virgil is estranged from his father and chooses not to wear his surname on his shirt either."

British tabloids

The British tabloids have found little gossip regarding Virgil and Rike's relationship. On the rare occasions she appears in public, there is seldom anything controversial to report. In 2018, the Daily Mail merely covered the Liverpool star and his wife on a shopping trip in New York.

Brief moments in the spotlight

While Nooitgedagt rarely steps in front of the cameras, she made a notable public appearance in 2024. Alongside her husband, she visited the Monaco Grand Prix, where they caught up with Formula 1 star Max Verstappen. She has also accompanied Van Dijk on the red carpet at the PFA Awards.

Van Dijk's 2024 Instagram recap offered brief glimpses of his wife and children, featuring highlights from Euro 2024 in Germany where Rike was present to support the Netherlands captain. Her backing in England will continue for the foreseeable future, as Van Dijk announced in April 2025 that he had signed a two-year contract extension with Liverpool. Heading into 2026, Rike continues to make occasional appearances across her husband's social media platforms.

Title celebrations after tough times with Oranje

Van Dijk endured an emotional and turbulent period during Euro 2024, later admitting he had harboured serious doubts about his international future before deciding to carry on. The following year proved to be a dream campaign, capped by lifting his second Premier League title with Liverpool.

As captain of the Reds, he etched his name into Dutch football history in 2025. The following season proved more difficult, leading to manager Arne Slot's departure. By the summer of 2026, Van Dijk was back wearing the captain's armband for the Netherlands at the World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

2026 World Cup

Van Dijk and Nooitgedagt are now parents to four children—three girls and a boy. Their eldest daughter briefly caught the spotlight during the World Cup when she challenged her father during a warm-down session, with eleven-year-old Nila demonstrating an impressive running stride.

While Nooitgedagt stayed off the pitch, she was very much present in the United States, appearing in photos shared by Nathan Aké's wife, Kaylee. The two partners spent plenty of time together throughout the tournament. For the Netherlands, the World Cup ended in disappointment with a round-of-32 exit against Morocco.

100th international cap

Following that elimination, questions loomed over whether Van Dijk would continue his international career. However, the captain remained dedicated to Oranje and reached the milestone of 100 caps at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven against Serbia—a remarkable feat for a player who only made his senior debut at 24 and spent years flying under the radar.

The entire family was present for the milestone occasion. Rike and the children watched on from the stands, while Van Dijk walked out onto the pitch accompanied by his son.
