Kylian Mbappé has etched his name into French football history, setting a new record for the most goals scored by a French player in a single football season.

The milestone was officially reached during the Round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay. The captain of Les Bleus converted a penalty, marking his 55th goal since the start of the 2025/26 season.

While the traditional football season typically concludes on June 30th each year, goals scored at the North American World Cup finals could be counted towards the preceding season's tally.

With this strike, Mbappé surpassed his own previous record of 54 goals, which he set during the 2022/23 season while still playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

This new achievement means the French superstar now occupies three of the top five spots for the most prolific French footballers in a single season. Behind him are Just Fontaine, who scored 53 goals in the 1957/58 season, and Philippe Gondet, who found the net 51 times in the 1965/66 season.
