Max Verstappen Discovers Tyre Nail Amid Dramatic Sepang Triumph

Max Verstappen overcame a bizarre obstacle en route to his first victory of the season in Malaysia after discovering a nail embedded in his front-left tyre. The Dutchman reported the issue to race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, yet it did nothing to derail his path to the top step of the podium.

A curious exchange played out over team radio during a red-flag stoppage. "I've got a nail in the tyre," the Red Bull driver reported. Lambiase sought immediate clarification: "In the front left?" After Verstappen confirmed, the engineer responded with a calm: "Thank you."

Even before the race properly got underway, Verstappen had to manage technical gremlins. During the formation laps behind the safety car, his RB22 suffered from erratic throttle response. While the Dutchman managed to keep going, several drivers behind experienced similar glitches, with Lewis Hamilton grinding to a halt on track.

Race control aborted the start, which was already delayed due to torrential rain over Sepang. When proceedings resumed, Verstappen lined up on pole alongside Hamilton on the front row. Red Bull opted for intermediate tyres, whereas Hamilton and both McLaren drivers gambled on slicks.

The asphalt proved far too wet for dry-weather rubber in the opening exchanges, justifying Verstappen's tyre choice despite losing positions off the line to Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.

It remains unclear where the nail originated, when it pierced the tyre, or if it caused any loss of pressure. Consequently, it is unknown how close he came to a costly puncture or race retirement. The incident was simply another hurdle in an eventful day for the Dutchman.

Verstappen quickly regrouped after the opening laps, breezing past Russell on track before setting his sights on Antonelli. When Valtteri Bottas went off and triggered a safety car, the Dutchman pitted to swap his intermediates for soft compound tyres under full safety car conditions.

Following the restart, Verstappen made light work of Antonelli. He launched an audacious attack around the outside of Turn 1 and sealed the lead on the exit of Turn 2. Even a late safety car could not derail his charge. Verstappen held off Antonelli to seal Red Bull's first victory with their proprietary power unit. Despite downpours, software glitches, and a stray nail in his tyre, Sunday at Sepang ended with the Dutchman firmly atop the podium.
