Ronaldo was a notable omission from the Manchester United team that suffered humiliation during the latest Manchester derby at the Etihad on Sunday.

The Portuguese legend has featured regularly as United's centre forward this season under Rangnick, but despite being their top scorer in all competitions this season, the 37-year-old has come under severe criticism for his performance leading the United line.

Speaking after his side defeated Cagliari at the weekend, Sarri in revealing a situation he had with Ronaldo during their time together at Juventus, the former Chelsea boss offered some important tips to his counterpart at United on how to get the best out of Ronaldo at Old Trafford.

"Cristiano scored more goals in his season with me than any other," Sarri said, according to quotes from Football Italia.

"He was prepared to play centre-forward in a few games when we had an emergency situation, but he didn’t much like the idea of doing it regularly.

"In those situations, you end up challenging the certainties that the player has. Ronaldo scored 35-40 goals per season by starting from that wider position, so, for him, it was an almost absurd request. That is understandable for the way he plays."

Ronaldo, who has scored just one goal in 2022 for the Red Devils, scored 37 goals in 46 appearances under Sarri at Italian giants, Juventus.
