Marseille Announces New Head Coach: The Man Who Denied Them Champions League Football Arrives

Frenchman Bruno Genesio was appointed as the new head coach of Olympique Marseille on Wednesday, replacing Habib Beye. Last season, Genesio led Lille to a 3rd-place finish in Ligue 1, securing a Champions League spot.

Beye took over from Roberto de Zerbi in February, and over four months, he couldn't guide his squad to catch the top three teams. They narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification, finishing two points behind Lille in 5th place. Discussions about a new coach were then put on hold in early June after the club received UEFA sanctions for failing to meet financial fair play regulations.

Genesio previously had stints at Lyon and Rennes.

"I chose Marseille because it will be a challenge for me. OM is an exceptional club with a strong identity and passionate fans. I can't wait. We will strive to assemble a squad worthy of wearing this club's jersey," the 59-year-old Lyon native was quoted on the OM website.
