Manchester United sweat over key duo ahead of crucial Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid

Manchester United could be without both Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo for their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid. The pair missed Monday's training session ahead of the team's flight to the Spanish capital, leaving their fitness in serious doubt.

Michael Carrick's side are currently enduring a difficult run of form. Following an opening 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani outfit Sabah, they have failed to win any of their last four matches. Most recently, they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, conceding a stoppage-time equaliser despite playing against ten men.

Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a straight red card in the second half for headbutting Shaw, who had reacted furiously to a heavy challenge from the Uruguayan international. Shaw managed to play on until the fifth minute of stoppage time, while Mainoo completed the full match. However, neither player took part in Monday's training session at Carrington.

Benjamin Šeško, Patrick Dorgu, and Noussair Mazraoui have all been ruled out of the clash against Atletico, joining long-term absentee Manuel Ugarte on the sidelines. On a brighter note, defender Matthijs de Ligt took part in Monday's session as he continues his rehabilitation from a back injury that has kept him out of action since last November.
