Manchester United chiefs have privately conceded that their summer transfer window was largely a disappointment. The Red Devils have won just one of their opening six Premier League matches, enduring their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years, alongside an early exit from the Carabao Cup. Supporters voiced their frustration with boos on three separate occasions during the draw against Tottenham. While manager Michael Carrick has borne the brunt of the criticism, the club's hierarchy accepts that the second phase of their squad overhaul fell well short of expectations.
United invested £225m last year to bring in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško, and Senne Lammens, but this summer's spending was capped at £155m. The marquee arrival was Carlos Baleba for £70m, who made his debut against Spurs. The Cameroonian had been on United's radar for two years, but fellow midfield recruits Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos were far down the club's initial shortlist. United had explored moves for Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Aurélien Tchouaméni to varying degrees, but were priced out of those deals. A move for Éderson collapsed at the final hurdle due to issues during the Brazilian's medical, forcing United to pivot to cheaper, more accessible alternatives. The Red Devils triggered Tielemans's £35m release clause, a move that went against their policy of signing players aged 22 to 26, given the Belgian is 29. Even so, Tielemans is the only player to have started all eight matches across all competitions this season.
United also parted with £50m to sign Santos from Chelsea, who started the opening-day clash against Hull City but has managed just 16 minutes in the Premier League since.
Decision-makers at Old Trafford are also understood to regret failing to secure a new left-back after holding exploratory talks over Newcastle defender Lewis Hall. Reinforcing the flank is set to be a priority in upcoming windows, with Luke Shaw now 31 and entering the final year of his contract. After 13 seasons with the club, the defender is widely expected to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
