The two teams haven't faced each other since February 2017, when they played out a goalless draw at Old Trafford. Earlier that month, Hull City secured a 2-1 home victory in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, but Manchester United advanced after a 2-0 win in the first leg. Historically, in the Premier League, the Red Devils have a strong advantage, never having lost to Hull City in the competition.

Under the guidance of Sergey Yakirovich, Hull City brought in 11 new players over the summer, investing approximately £78-80 million. Notable new arrivals include club-record signing Nobel Mendy (acquired from Rayo Vallecano for over £20 million), goalkeepers Konstantinos Tzolakis and Jack Butland, experienced midfielder Hidemasa Morita from Sporting Lisbon, Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United, as well as youngsters Luca Gourna-Douath, Elliot Stroud, and Lucas Herrington.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick's Manchester United strengthened their midfield with the additions of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea. At the same time, Rasmus Højlund (who moved to Napoli) and Casemiro departed the club, while captain Bruno Fernandes reaffirmed his desire to stay despite an offer from Galatasaray.

Hull City secured pre-season victories against Konyaspor (3-0) and Rizespor (2-1), drew with Kasımpaşa (1-1) and Nice (0-0), and suffered a defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt (0-2). Oliver McBurnie stood out with two goals during the summer preparations.

Manchester United began their summer with a 1-0 loss to Wrexham, followed by convincing wins against Rosenborg (5-0) and Atlético Madrid (2-1). In subsequent friendlies, the team drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain and Leeds United, and lost their final warm-up match 4-2 to AC Milan.

The hosts enter the match with significant injury concerns. Jack Butland (hand surgery), Hidemasa Morita, Joe Gelhardt, Charlie Hughes, Elliot Matazo, Matty Jacob, Oscar Zambrano, and Darko Gyabi are all sidelined. Konstantinos Tzolakis is expected to start in goal for Hull City, with Oliver McBurnie leading the attack.

Manchester United also has several players out due to injury, including Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount, and Tom Heaton. Nevertheless, Michael Carrick has Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo available in attacking positions, and new signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are ready for their official debuts.

Hull City's primary objective for the campaign will be to retain their Premier League status, with the club management largely relying on promising young players. Manchester United, having finished third last season with 71 points, will be aiming for a strong challenge at the top of the league table.
