Man Utd Legend Asks to Be Taken Off Man City Duties Until Financial Fair Play Verdict
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has asked to be stood down from covering local rivals Manchester City on Sky Sports over the coming months until a final decision is reached regarding the club's appeal against their Premier League financial rule breach verdict. The former Red Devils captain addressed the matter following City's convincing 3-0 victory away at Liverpool, where Enzo Maresca's side made the most of their numerical advantage following Ryan Gravenberch's red card.
"We were just recording the podcast, and I said that if they could take me off Man City games for the next few months until the verdict is delivered, I'd be more than happy," Neville said. While admitting the team's displays merit praise, he pointed out that the ongoing legal battle makes it difficult to discuss their sporting achievements without reservations. "Coming to Anfield and winning is incredibly tough. We should be praising the team without any 'buts' or hesitation. Yet, in the back of your mind, there's always something else lingering," the pundit added.
Manchester City are appealing against an independent commission's ruling that found them guilty on 114 of 115 charges concerning financial regulation breaches over a nine-year period. The club have strenuously denied any wrongdoing, with the verdict set to have monumental implications for their future. "This current situation is not good for the Premier League, and it is going to drag on for at least a few more months," Neville warned. The appeal was lodged on October 1, with the hearing scheduled to take place within 12 weeks and a final decision expected within 30 days of its conclusion.
