The woman struck in the face by a broken bat at Fenway Park is expected to survive, according to the Boston Police.

Tonya Carpenter was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston on Friday after a fragment from Oakland Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrie's bat flew into the crowd and hit her, causing serious facial injuries.

But after spending the night in hospital, Carpenter is understood to be in a serious but stable condition on Saturday.

"She is expected to survive," Boston police spokesperson Rachel McGuire told the Boston Globe.

Carpenter was injured in the second inning of the Boston Red Sox's 4-2 victory over the Athletics at Fenway Park, with the woman taken from the stadium on a stretcher after being attended to by paramedics for several minutes.
