Craig Counsell begins with Milwaukee Brewers win
Craig Counsell was a winner in his first game in charge of the Milwaukee Brewers, while the Houston Astros' MLB winning streak ended at 10 matches.
Counsell, who took the reins from the sacked Ron Roenicke, oversaw the Brewers' third straight victory - a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers - but his first after Roenicke was sacked late on Monday.
The St Louis Cardinals came from 5-0 and 8-4 down to beat the Chicago Cubs 10-9 and chalk up a seventh straight victory.
The Astros' purple patch was ended, though, as the Texas Rangers scored in the eighth and ninth innings to pinch a 2-1 victory.
Felix Hernandez moved to a 5-0 record on the mound this season, as he helped steer the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
The San Francisco Giants shut out the San Diego Padres 2-0, the Minnesota Twins pipped the Oakland Athletics 8-7, the Tampa Bay Rays scored four early runs to ease to a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies rode a three-run first to a 5-2 triumph over the Atlanta Braves, the Toronto Blue Jays were 3-1 victors over the New York Yankees and the Miami Marlins fell 6-4 to the Washington Nationals.
The Colorado Rockies' hosting of the Arizona Diamondbacks was washed out.
IMPACT PLAYERSStephen Vogt, Oakland Athletics: Catcher Vogt went three-for-five with a home run and five RBIs to remain hot after hitting two home runs on Sunday.
Hector Gomez, Milwaukee Brewers: Shortstop Gomez hit his first career home run and scored two runs on a two-for-three day.
Yunel Escobar, Washington Nationals: Escobar continued to fill in nicely at third base for the injured Anthony Rendon. He went five-for-five with a run and two RBIs in a 6-4 win against the Marlins.
KEY INJURIESHanley Ramirez departed the Red Sox's game with the Rays due to a left arm/shoulder injury after crashing into a wall in foul territory while completing a catch.
Placed onto 15-day disabled lists were the Mariners' Austin Jackson (right ankle) and the Twins' Oswaldo Arcia (right hip flexor strain).
Rockies pitcher Adam Ottavino will miss the remainder of the season, as he undergoes Tommy John surgery.
REACTIONS"Dear haters... I have heard you. Therefore since I have done all of the rehab I can possibly do already I shall not move from my bed nor enjoy my life whatsoever for the rest of the day so you think I'm trying," Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander posted on Instagram.
FACT OF THE DAYCounsell is the first manager in MLB history to have his debut come against a defending Cy Young and MVP winner.
SURPRISE PERFORMERSGood: The Cardinals (19-6) are off to their equal-best start in franchise history. In 1899, the St Louis franchise, then known as the Perfectos and with Cy Young on the mound, also had a 19-6 start.
Bad: Starting pitching in the Cubs-Cardinals game. Carlos Martinez had been excellent to start the season, but was dismantled against the Cubs. He allowed seven runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work. Travis Wood was not much better for the Cubs. He allowed six runs in five innings, but somehow neither pitcher earned a loss.
A LOOK AHEADThe high-scoring Orioles take on the Mets in New York, former team-mates Drew Smyly and Rick Porcello face off when the Rays play the Red Sox at Fenway Park while the Twins host the Athletics.
