Lyon secured a routine 2-0 victory over newcomers Lorient in a French Ligue 1 matchday 29 fixture. The first half ended goalless, but after the break, the superior class of "Les Gones" shone through, delivering a quick one-two punch with goals from Roman Yaremchuk (49’) and Corentin Tolisso (56’).

This win propels the Olympic team back into contention for Champions League spots, placing them just one point behind fourth-placed Marseille, who defeated Metz on Friday.

Furthermore, "Les Gones" dislodged Rennes, who had temporarily occupied fifth place after their 2-1 victory over Angers yesterday.

Lyon is also closing in on third-placed Lille, who thrashed Toulouse 4-0 away in one of today's earlier matches.

Ironically, that result helped Lorient maintain their ninth position in the table, as Toulouse sits tenth with one point less. The newcomers are precisely in the middle of the standings, and with five matches remaining, it appears they will be playing for pride, as they are 12 points adrift of European qualification spots and hold a 14-point lead over the bottom three.
