Colombia's World Cup 2026 journey ended in the most heartbreaking fashion. In a dramatic Round of 16 clash at BC Place in Vancouver, Néstor Lorenzo's squad fell to Switzerland after a penalty shootout. The match remained goalless through regular time and extra time, with the Swiss triumphing 4-3 in the spot-kick lottery.

Despite the disappointment of elimination, Colombian forward Luis Suárez maintained his composure and shared his emotions immediately after the final whistle.

"I believe this national team was destined for greater things. I just want to thank the entire country and the people who filled the stadium here. Hopefully, this will be a major turning point, because what this team showed at this World Cup should be viewed positively," Suárez stated.

Colombia will rue their missed opportunity, as statistics showed they were more active in front of goal. "Los Cafeteros" registered a total of 15 shots towards Gregor Kobel's goal, while Murat Yakin's Swiss side managed only 7 attempts. However, only 3 of the South Americans' shots were on target. Ball possession was nearly even, with Switzerland holding a slight edge at 53%.
