London Giants in Crisis: Tottenham Relegation-Threatened, Chelsea's Champions League Hopes Fading
Another London club, Chelsea, is also struggling. Following their 0-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, they've fallen out of the Champions League qualification spots.
Tottenham conceded a 2-2 equalizer in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time. This Premier League season, they've managed only 11 points from 17 home matches, securing just two league victories at their North London stadium. Only Burnley has an equally poor home record.
Spurs, whose only taste of victory in 2026 has been in the Champions League, currently sit in 18th place, the highest relegation spot. They are one point behind 17th-placed West Ham and two points adrift of 16th-placed Nottingham Forest. The "Lilywhites" are now on a 15-game league run without a full three points.
However, manager Roberto De Zerbi believes his team can win all their remaining matches and avoid relegation. "It's hard to hear my words now, but if you watch the players and analyze their level, I think we can win five games in a row. I don't want to be arrogant, especially now, but we have enough quality to fight and win games consecutively," the 46-year-old Italian coach was quoted by AP.
Pedro Porro's header in the 39th minute put the home side ahead, but Kaoru Mitoma equalized in first-half stoppage time. All signs pointed to Xavi Simons' beautiful goal in the 77th minute securing a Tottenham triumph, but "Spurs" fans had to endure another harsh blow.
Georginio Rutter's equalizer also meant that the relegation of last-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers was further delayed. However, Wolves are heading for the lower division, as they are 15 points from safety with five rounds remaining after a 0-3 loss to Leeds United.
Chelsea subsequently lost 0-1 to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in a direct battle for a top-five spot, which guarantees Champions League football next season. Matheus Cunha scored the only goal in the 43rd minute. While United solidified their third-place position, Chelsea remained sixth, and their participation in Europe's most prestigious club competition next season appears increasingly unlikely.
They are four points behind fifth-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Chelsea has lost their last four league matches, all without scoring a goal, and three of those at home, increasing the pressure on the manager. "Right now, every small mistake ends up in our net. That has to change," Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior told AP.
The "Red Devils" now hold a 10-point lead over Chelsea, making their Champions League qualification almost certain. Cunha scored after an assist from Bruno Fernandes, who now has 18 assists in the league season, just two shy of the Premier League record held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
"These are the moments we live for, this is why we do it. Big games, important games, big performances. And when the fans feel it, it gives me great satisfaction to be a part of it and to see people enjoying it. That's the beauty of football in its purest form. It was an important triumph for us for several reasons – we managed absences and injuries, with Leny Yoro dropping out at the last minute, and we had to adapt.
The players deserve huge credit for that, as do the coaches for their preparation and adaptation in recent days. There are many things we can be proud of. We can play better, but it was about the result, and we achieved it," Manchester United manager Michael Carrick was quoted by DPA.
The home side also had to contend with an injury to Brazilian Estevao, who left the field after just 15 minutes. "He was crying at halftime. It looks like a hamstring injury," Rosenior revealed, according to DPA.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is also under pressure after his team lost 1-2 at home to Bournemouth, with fans booing them after their third consecutive league defeat. The "Magpies" sit in 14th place after Saturday. Brentford shared points with Fulham in a goalless draw, extending their run to five consecutive draws.
