Lisandro Martínez facing uncertain Manchester United future after infuriating board and teammates
Lisandro Martínez's future at Manchester United is hanging in the balance after the Argentine publicly criticized the club's hierarchy yesterday. The defender's contract is set to expire next summer, and while United hold an option to extend, Sky Sports reports that an extension is now looking increasingly unlikely.
The club had already mapped out plans to overhaul their backline in upcoming transfer windows by targeting new centre-backs and left-backs. Following Martínez's latest outburst, his departure appears all but inevitable.
Old Trafford chiefs are also weighing up disciplinary action against Martínez, though the exact nature of any sanction has yet to be determined.
According to Sky Sports, Martínez's comments triggered anger and disbelief among both the United board and the dressing room. At least one teammate confronted him over the remarks while boarding the team flight back to Manchester, with the squad unimpressed by the insinuation that they are not good enough to compete at the top level.
Martínez has reportedly harboured a desire to leave United for some time. Over the summer, he attempted to push through a switch to Atlético Madrid—the very side that beat the Red Devils yesterday—looking to reunite with Argentina teammate Cristian Romero, who joined the Rojiblancos from Tottenham. However, a concrete offer never materialized at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old has previous form for explosive remarks directed at club management, dating back to his time at Ajax in 2022. Also eager to force a transfer back then, Martínez infamously labelled Ajax sporting director Gerry Hamstra a "nobody."
Should the standoff escalate, it could trigger major defensive headaches for United, whose backline is already severely depleted by injuries and suspensions.
While Manchester United posted record revenues of £678 million, they still registered a pre-tax loss of £47 million alongside £70 million in loan interest repayments. Consequently, the club lacks the unconstrained financial muscle currently enjoyed by rivals like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
United are adhering to a phased transfer blueprint. Last year's priority was bolstering the frontline, while this summer's efforts focused on rebuilding the midfield. A defensive overhaul is slated to be next on the agenda.
