Liam Lawson unexpectedly finds himself back in a Red Bull car this weekend at Zandvoort, but the New Zealander downplayed the significance of the risk involved in his return to the former world champions' team, at least for a single race.
He was called up to replace Isack Hadjar, who sustained a wrist injury during the summer break.
This marks Lawson's second stint with Red Bull, his previous tenure lasting only two races at the start of 2025. A pair of disappointing performances then led to his return to the junior team.
His current Red Bull adventure comes amidst a strong campaign with Racing Bulls, where he has secured eight top-10 finishes in the first 11 rounds of the season.
"Of course, I spoke with Max Verstappen," Lawson told the media today. "I've spoken with him many times in the past. I'm sure tomorrow I'll be closely watching a lot of what he does. I also have his simulator data to use as a reference point."
"As for whether it's a risk, I don't know... it's a unique situation."
"This year has been great in my own car, but at the same time, I'm excited about the opportunity this weekend to drive something different, to be back with this team, even if it's just for one weekend."
Lawson's vacated seat at Racing Bulls will be filled by Yuki Tsunoda, who returns after being released by Red Bull at the end of 2025.
The rotation occurs as the sport returns from its summer hiatus. Lawson recounted learning the surprising news while on a plane en route to the UK.
"On Monday, I literally landed, I hadn't even gotten off the plane yet," Lawson said when asked when he learned of the potential change. "I was basically returning from vacation and landed in the UK for what I thought would be preparation with Racing Bulls. After that phone call, my week changed very quickly."
