Nevertheless, the seven-time world champion was pleased with his display following tricky practice sessions where he struggled to find the right car balance. A last-minute setup adjustment ahead of qualifying made all the difference, putting the Briton on the front row for the first time since his Barcelona victory in June.

"I love this energy. A huge, huge thank you to Malaysia for hosting us. It is hot here. I keep saying it, but it created a massive challenge for the tyres, the cars, and the mechanics in the garage. I'm really grateful to my team. We made numerous changes throughout practice. "Because the car was sliding and the tyres were overheating, it was very tough to find the right balance, but we made one final tweak before qualifying and I think we nailed it. To be within two or three tenths of Max, who has been quick all weekend, is great and I'm really thankful. "I'm much happier with the car, but tomorrow is a completely different ball game. It will be tough to keep these tyres alive as they overheat right from the start. Every bit of wheelspin, every little slide will make a difference. I'd like to think we have a good balance. Max was really strong on his long runs, so I'll do my absolute best to stay with him tomorrow," Hamilton said.
