Rayo Vallecano's long-awaited return to their home ground after a 140-day absence was marred by tension and vandalism. The Madrid-based side host Italian outfit Cagliari this afternoon in the Trofeo de Vallecas after the Community of Madrid authorities finally lifted the stadium's closure. However, what was supposed to be a celebratory day for supporters began on a sour note with severe damage inflicted on the directors' box.
The perimeter around the stadium was covered in graffiti calling for the immediate resignation of club president Raúl Martín Presa, while the interior of the stands also suffered property damage overnight.
The presidential box—set to host the board members of both Rayo Vallecano and Cagliari—took the brunt of the vandalism. Seats in the VIP section were slashed and splashed with red and yellow paint.
According to Cadena SER, a group of masked individuals broke into the facility during the night to carry out the attack. Police have already obtained CCTV footage provided by the club, which clearly captures the break-in and the vandalism in the directors' lounge.
Despite the damage, club management decided to proceed with the pre-season friendly as scheduled. Having received clearance from regional authorities, the Vallecas outfit will officially inaugurate this new chapter at their stadium against the Serie A side.
Included in Cagliari's matchday squad is 20-year-old Bulgarian Ivan Sulev.
