Barcelona right-back Jules Koundé has admitted that his dip in form last season cost him his regular starting berth under Hansi Flick. The France international has started just two of the Spanish champions' opening seven games this campaign.

"These are the manager's decisions. I feel great physically and I have no injuries. If I'm getting less playing time, it's down to last season, which was well below my usual standards. It's a natural consequence and a challenge I gladly embrace. I'll need to put the work in, as I always do. It's up to me to get back to my best. I know that when I'm in top shape, the minutes will come," Koundé said during his press conference ahead of France's clash with Belgium, while also insisting he is unfazed by the squad competition under new national team manager Zinedine Zidane.

"I don't feel threatened at all. There has always been competition, and the coach encourages the new arrivals to express themselves. They've settled in well. Competition drives you forward. Whether you're playing for France or at club level, you can't afford to rest on your laurels. To be honest, I'm mostly competing with myself—striving to be the best version of me. Having depth is always a positive for the squad. Things are running smoothly under Zidane. He is very close to the players and loves to communicate and share advice. I don't like comparing managers, but we aim to press aggressively when we lose the ball and keep control when we have it. Step by step, we'll see further progress," the defender added.
