Kevin Garnett: I almost joined the Lakers instead of Boston, but Kobe acted too arrogant
Former NBA MVP and champion Kevin Garnett has revealed fascinating details about his career-defining decision in the summer of 2007—a move that altered the course of modern basketball history. Appearing on the Out The Mud podcast, the legendary forward shared that he was on the verge of joining the Los Angeles Lakers before ultimately choosing the Boston Celtics, where he went on to capture the title in his very first season.
Garnett recalled a pivotal conversation with close friend Chauncey Billups that convinced him it was time to demand a trade out of Minnesota:
"I talked to Chauncey, to T-Lue—real friends. It was summertime, we were all working out, and he told me: 'Man, you've got to move on. I know you don't want to, but there'll come a time when you realize you've wasted your prime here.' That was the first time I actually listened to advice like that, and his words really hit home," Garnett said.
"After that, I just called Kevin McHale and said, 'Let's find another solution. It's not working here anymore.' He and Danny Ainge were friends, they got the deal moving, and everything just made total sense. I had played informally with both Paul Pierce and Ray Allen before. Ray is from South Carolina, I knew him well, so I loved the idea," Garnett explained.
Failed connection with Kobe Bryant tipped the scales in favor of the Celtics
Beyond the Celtics and Lakers, the Phoenix Suns were also in serious contention to land the superstar forward. However, Garnett's final choice swung toward Boston after an attempt to connect with Lakers icon Kobe Bryant went nowhere.
"I liked Boston's situation more than the others. I had an option with Phoenix, and I had an option with the Lakers. But I couldn't get ahold of Kobe on the phone—he was acting too arrogant. So I told myself, 'You know what? I'm going to Boston.' And that's how I ended up there. It turned out to be the perfect decision," KG explained.
Garnett added that prior to finalizing his move, he reached out to former Celtics star Antoine Walker for insight: "Before heading to Boston, I had to speak with Antoine. He broke down everything about Paul—what he cares about, what works with the team, and what doesn't. I took all of that advice to heart," Garnett shared.
