Paralympic champion Pistorius shot and killed Ms Steenkamp in his Pretoria home on February 14, 2013 and was subsequently charged with her "wilful and intentional murder".

Pistorius denied the charge, claiming he thought Ms Steenkamp was an intruder, and was found guilty of culpable homicide last month.

On Tuesday, Judge Thokozile Masipa announced that Pistorius would serve a maximum of five years in prison while, for a second firearms offence, he was sentenced to three years suspended for five, to run concurrently.

After the sentencing, June Steenkamp declared she was happy with Judge Masipa's decision.

"He's going to pay something," she said. "I'm exhausted. I'm just glad it's over."

Barry Steenkamp echoed those sentiments.

"We are satisfied," he said. "We're just pleased that the whole thing is over."
