In his 55th race, Newgarden led for 46 laps - more than any other driver - to take the chequered flag.

"The car, the team made it easy on me. They deserve the victory. Let's go to the next one and try to do it again," Newgarden said, according to IndyCar's website.

The victory took the 24-year-old up to fourth overall with 119 points, 17 behind championship leader Juan Pablo Montoya, who finished 14th.

Helio Castroneves (133) remains second overall, while Dixon (123) backed up his victory at the Grand Prix of Long Beach with another podium finish to move into third.
