Jordan Henderson described the England national team as "special" and expressed his pride at being part of it, following an unforgettable night that ended for him in a Mexican hospital.
The veteran, participating in his seventh major international tournament, experienced an unusual Sunday evening at the Estadio Azteca. He managed to pick up a yellow card without playing a minute, and then suffered a severe injury. After the match, Henderson joined his teammates for the traditional rendition of the hit song "Wonderwall," but fell awkwardly while jumping over the advertising hoardings.
The midfielder was stretchered off and taken to the hospital, where he is expected to undergo wrist surgery. Nevertheless, through an Instagram post, he hinted that he would remain with manager Thomas Tuchel's squad.
"A night that will certainly be remembered! What an incredible performance despite all the difficulties," Henderson wrote.
"I'm so proud to be part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big Saturday is ahead," he added.
Henderson's injury is a significant blow for the team, which will also be without Jarell Quansah for the next match against Norway. However, the Football Association is considering appealing the defender's red card. The Bayer Leverkusen player returned to action after an ankle injury and started at right-back against Mexico, but was sent off in the second half after VAR reviewed his foul.
Meanwhile, Reece James, who only played in the first two matches, hopes to return to the squad for the clash with Norway, having been recovering from a hamstring injury.
