Akpoborie expects improvement from Peseiro over 'unimpressive' Super Eagles start
Former Nigerian international Jonathan Akpoborie has criticised the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Jose Peseiro over his tenure so far with the senior national team.
The Portuguese manager took over the Super Eagles job in May 2022 and has so far lost four of his first six matches as coach of the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles recently lost two friendly matches to the home-based and first-choice Algerian national team during the September international break.
Super Eagles lack identity under Peseiro - Akpoborie
Speaking on the performance of Peseiro so far, Akpoborie candidly stated that he has not been impressed with the matches the Portuguese tactician has overseen.
The former VfB Stuttgart forward noted that the Super Eagles team still lacks an identity under Peseiro, a feature he expected to have seen after the manager took over.
Akpoborie said as reported by Algeriemondeinfos: "I haven't been impressed with the performance of the Super Eagles since Jose Peseiro took over.
"With the few matches played so far, I would have expected the team to have an identity for the way they wanted to play."
Akpoborie expects improvement with time
The 61-year-old ex-footballer noted that the Super Eagles did not have coordination from the defence to the attack in the recent friendly matches they played against the Desert Foxes of Algeria.
However, the former Nigeria international was optimistic that the Super Eagles will improve with more games under the guidance of Peseiro.
“The game against Algeria, the Super Eagles didn't really have that solid understanding. There was no construction from defense to midfield and then attack," Akpoborie explained.
“Well, I want to believe that with more games they will improve something and we will have the Eagles that we have always aspired to."
The Super Eagles are billed to face the Portuguese national team in a friendly match on Thursday, November 17 before the 2022 World Cup kicks off.
