Liverpool defender delighted for Cameroon’s 2017 AFCON title despite opting out
After being named in the squad for the tournament, Matip withdrew in controversial circumstances, choosing instead to remain with Liverpool.
A dispute ensued as he was made to miss five Liverpool games as a result due as FIFA insisted that he will not play for his club throughout the duration of the tournament.
Cameroon, despite missing seven first team players, went all the way to win the title.
Despite his controversial withdrawal, the defender is delighted for the Indomitable Lions.
“I knew they could win it. I was happy,” Matip told Daily Mail.
“Cameroon is a big football nation. I was happy for them because the last years were not easy and they got back to their old spot.”
The 25-year-old is back playing for Liverpool and wants to only concentrate on the future.
“It’s done now and I’m looking to the future,” he added.
“I only wanted to stay here and play. It was not easy because I didn’t understand what was going on. Now the problem is solved and I can concentrate on Liverpool.”
Matip will be looking to help Liverpool solidify their top four position when they visit Manchester City in Sunday, March 19's late fixture.
