Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez was on Friday, January 1 chased by police in his car as he drove to training.

Rodriguez was driving a black Audi R8 and was spotted overtaking a car at high speed down the left-hand lane of the M40 ring road in Madrid at around 4.45pm.

The officers activated sirens and lights in their car and began the chase, which reportedly exceeded 125mph (200km/h) - twice the road's legal speed limit.

The chase lasted 3.7 miles (6km) and went on for around 15 minutes, ending only when Rodriguez pulled into Real's Valdebebas training complex with the police vehicle just behind.

The midfielder in a police report argued that he was running late for training and did not notice the police in pursuit because he was playing loud music.

The player was not arrested but the officers cautioned him under the Public Safety Act and will notify prosecutors.

They will decide whether the midfielder committed a road safety offence and whether further action will be taken.
