Iraola: We were the better side until the red card

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola was left frustrated following a 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City. The Basque tactician voiced strong discontent with the refereeing decision that led to Ryan Gravenberch's dismissal, emphasizing that the moment completely altered the course of the clash at Anfield.

"I think it's obvious. We played two different games today. One match up until the 60th minute, and a completely different contest after the red card. Up to that point, we were the better side on the pitch, but after that, they dominated," Iraola said.

The Merseyside boss broke down the sequence leading to Ryan Gravenberch's second yellow card in detail.

"The first booking wasn't a yellow card at all. Anderson carried on running for a few more strides; the referee wasn't even going to call a foul. I have no idea why he showed him a yellow. At that stage, we had around nine players behind the ball," the Spaniard stated.

"It is extremely tough to press them when it's 11 against 11, but going a man down changes the dynamic entirely. We conceded immediately before we even had the chance to make a substitution. Once you go 1-0 down, you're forced to play in a completely different way," the manager explained.

Despite the red card, Iraola praised the Dutch midfielder's display: "He played very well today. He carried the ball out excellently and defended with great solidity."

He also offered high praise for the character of his squad and the backing from the stands.

"I feel very proud of the players today. It was not easy. They matched the required intensity and won their duels. Our supporters were also top-class. They were exemplary from the moment we arrived at the ground. The red card came during our best spell of the game, but even afterwards, the fans truly appreciated the players' efforts," the manager added.

Finally, he provided an update on the squad's recovery from injuries, turning his attention to their upcoming European tie against LASK.

"Their injuries aren't too severe, but we travel to Austria in two days. It will be difficult for them to be ready in time for the next fixture," Iraola concluded.
