The Akwa Ibom International Stadium has been reportedly shut down by the company which was contracted to build it.
The 30,000 – capacity venue, with a bullet –proof State Box that has 70 seats stadium which was built by the Akwa ibom state government in Uyo was opened with fanfare a few months ago.
President Goodluck Jonathan, Ghanaian leader President John Dramani Mahama and Ivorian Head of State, Dr. Alassane Ouattara and other dignitaries were in attendance at the opening of the stadium.
According to a report on futaa.com, the stadium has been shut down by the contractors who are insisting on getting paid by the state government.
Futta also reported that the Special Adviser to the Akwa Ibom state government denied the reports, revealing that the stadium was shut down for a different reason.
"It is true the stadium is locked up now, but it is for a different reason, I don't think it has to do with outstanding payments, he is quoted to say by Futta.
" As I speak to you, athletes are training on the practising pitch ahead of a Championship scheduled to hold in the stadium from Friday.
"Let us wait until friday, if at that time the stadium is not opened, then we can start worrying," the special assistant added.
