Barcelona's 18-year-old winger and Ballon d'Or contender was effectively nullified by international teammate Marc Cucurella, with the Real Madrid left-back playing a starring role in his side's 2-1 victory away at Barcelona.

Their individual battle had already captured the headlines well before kickoff. Following Cucurella's summer switch from Chelsea to Real Madrid, Yamal playfully joked that he would run rings around his Spain teammate in El Clásico. "I told him he’ll start against me in the first game and be benched for the second because I’m going to destroy him in the first," the young forward quipped at the time.

On the pitch, however, reality told a completely different story, with Cucurella getting the upper hand for virtually the entire contest. Yamal attempted to make an impact down the right flank with his trademark solo runs, but the Real full-back gave him no room to breathe and won the vast majority of their duels. Madrid boss José Mourinho was full of praise for his defender's performance after the match.

"The boy (Yamal) is fantastic and very difficult to play against because, on top of his quality, he is extremely smart. He tried everything to get Cucurella booked, but Cucu dealt with it brilliantly," the Portuguese manager said. Mourinho added that it was likely Cucurella's toughest test in a Real shirt to date, but one in which he stood tall against world-class opposition.

Real Madrid ultimately secured a 2-1 victory at the Camp Nou courtesy of a Kylian Mbappé brace. The French forward broke the deadlock in the 41st minute before Raphinha pulled the hosts level on 61 minutes, but Mbappé struck again in the 87th minute to snatch all three points. The result snapped Barcelona's home winning run and trimmed the gap behind the La Liga leaders to three points.

For Yamal, widely regarded as one of world football's brightest prospects, the encounter served as a reminder that even extraordinary technical ability can be contained by a disciplined, well-drilled defender. Cucurella, meanwhile, proved he can be a vital pillar for Real Madrid in the biggest fixtures of the campaign.
