Guardiola May Never Manage England Following Man City Financial Scandal

Pep Guardiola may never take charge of the England national team following the fallout from Manchester City's financial breaches scandal. That is the view of journalist Guillem Balagué, the Spaniard's biographer, who believes the escalating controversy has altered the landscape regarding any potential appointment. Speaking in an interview, Balagué revealed that Guardiola came close to accepting the England job in 2024 before opting to extend his stay at City, prompting the Football Association to turn to Thomas Tuchel.

"For two months, Pep Guardiola kept the FA waiting to see if he wanted to become England manager. Instead, he stayed at Manchester City and renewed his contract, after which they turned to Tuchel. In my view, Guardiola would have been in the running to succeed Tuchel," Balagué stated. However, he now believes the English FA would be reluctant to appoint such a polarising figure, while Guardiola himself might avoid the role given the intense debate clouding his footballing legacy.

The comments come in the wake of an independent commission ruling that found Manchester City guilty of serious Premier League financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. Although there is no evidence suggesting Guardiola had any knowledge of the alleged infractions, the Spaniard has publicly stood by the club and its hierarchy. "I want every Manchester City fan around the world to know that I am here – more than ever. I have always been and will always stand behind my club, the board, the players, the staff, and the supporters. We will get through this together," he posted on social media. City continue to deny any wrongdoing and are appealing the verdict.
