Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka didn't hide his pride in his teammates after their dramatic victory over Colombia in the World Cup Round of 16. In a match filled with tactical maneuvering and immense pressure at BC Place in Vancouver, Switzerland triumphed 4-3 in a penalty shootout after regular time and extra time ended goalless.

"I think this generation we have now is special. I hope one day we see another like it, but we've waited a long time for a group like this," the experienced midfielder shared.

"We, the more experienced players, are pushed by the younger ones, and at the same time, we have to set an example every day and in every match. Of course, we try to pass on our experience, but above all, the mentality that even as a small nation, anything is possible at this level, in elite football. From the coaching staff to the last player, we can all be proud of what we've achieved," the Switzerland captain added.

The match offered few clear-cut scoring opportunities, with both teams opting for cautious play. Colombia was the more active side in attack with 15 attempts on goal compared to Switzerland's 7, but goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and the solid defense in front of him kept a clean sheet. The Swiss controlled possession for 53% of the time and displayed exceptional discipline.

During the penalty shootout, the tension reached its peak. Manuel Akanji missed for the Swiss, but his teammates remained composed. On the other side, Davinson Sanchez and Cucho Hernandez failed to beat Kobel, allowing Ruben Vargas to become the hero. The Sevilla winger converted the decisive penalty, sending Switzerland into the quarterfinals.

With this success, Murat Yakin's team continues its impressive run in the tournament. The next challenge for Xhaka's "special generation" is even tougher: a clash against reigning world champions Argentina. The match will be played on Sunday in Kansas City, and the Swiss believe their mentality can deliver another surprise on football's biggest stage.
