Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka has been handed a suspended fine of 150,000 Swiss francs with a two-year probationary period for using a forged vaccination certificate during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The midfielder clarified the ruling in a post on Instagram, explaining that the sentence amounts to 50 daily rates of 3,000 francs each. The financial penalty will not be enforced provided he commits no further offences over the next two years. Xhaka confirmed the sanction was issued for unlawfully obtaining a forged document.
"This means that the penalty will not be enforced as long as I stay out of trouble during this two-year period," Xhaka wrote. "I was handed a suspended fine equivalent to 50 daily rates of 3,000 francs each, with a two-year probation period, for fraudulently obtaining a fake document."
It remains unclear at this stage whether the midfielder will face any sporting repercussions. The Swiss Football Association confirmed they are aware of the court ruling and announced they are ready to proceed with planned discussions regarding their future with the national team player.
Last month, Xhaka publicly admitted to having held coronavirus vaccination documents without actually being vaccinated.
