The last black woman to win the award was Debbie Allen for her role in the 1982 NBC series "Fame" at the 1983 Golden Globes.

The 44-year-old Ross took home the award for her role as Dr. Rainbow "Bow" Johnson in the critically acclaimed ABC sitcom "Black-ish."

Ross who is also the first black nominee in the category since 1984, beat Rachel Bloom - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep, Sarah Jessica Parker - Divorce, Issa Rae - Insecure and Gina Rodriguez - Jane the Virgin.

Speaking at the event, the actress dedicated her win to all women of colour, "this is for all the women of colour and colorful people whose stories, ideas and thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important," she said. "But I want you to know that I see you. We see you."
