Germany Demands FIFA Explain Trump's Alleged Influence in Balogun Red Card Reversal
Bernd Neuendorf, President of the German Football Association (DFB), has called for an explanation from FIFA regarding the controversial decision to overturn the suspension of American forward Folarin Balogun.
"FIFA must clarify reports suggesting that the decision to revoke Balogun's red card was made during a phone call between US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino," Neuendorf stated on Monday.
"The perception of active political interference in sports must be dispelled immediately. The integrity of the competition and trust in FIFA are at stake," the German official added, as quoted by BTA.
Balogun was sent off during the USA's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, which would have automatically ruled him out of their upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium. However, FIFA announced on Sunday that they were overturning the suspension, making it conditional for a period of one year.
American sources later revealed that Trump had contacted Infantino regarding the case. The US President subsequently congratulated FIFA on social media for their decision.
FIFA has not provided any explanation for its decision to lift the forward's suspension.
