German Legend's Scathing Criticism After World Cup Debacle. Nagelsmann Labeled a 'Fiasco,' Successor Proposed

Former German national football team captain Lothar Matthäus sharply criticized coach Julian Nagelsmann following the national team's disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup. According to the 1990 World Champion, the entire project under Nagelsmann's leadership was an "absolute fiasco."

"The team lacked a leader, playing quality, a solid defense, and teamwork. It was nothing short of chaos," Matthäus wrote in his column for Bild. He believes Nagelsmann made too many mistakes in squad selection, tactics, and the World Cup roster.

He criticized Nagelsmann for not having an alternative plan, stubbornly sticking to his system, and ignoring advice from both outside and within the coaching staff. He also slammed his communication style with players. "Prioritizing WhatsApp messages over personal conversations? That's unthinkable for a leader," he stated.

Nagelsmann resigned after Germany's surprising exit in the Round of 16, following a 3-4 penalty shootout loss to Paraguay. Matthäus also noted that the German Football Association (DFB) leadership shares responsibility, having, in his opinion, believed for too long that the situation would improve. He named former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as a suitable successor for Nagelsmann on the national team bench. The DPA news agency reported this.
