George Russell unmotivated by battle for second place in F1 standings

Mercedes driver George Russell has expressed complete indifference regarding the fight for runner-up spot in the Formula 1 standings. The Briton, who was tipped as a major title contender ahead of the season, faces the real prospect of dropping as low as fifth place as early as this weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

A challenging campaign for the Briton deepened following a frustrating eighth-place finish at the United States Grand Prix. His outing in Austin was further compromised by a five-second penalty, while teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured victory to move within just two points of clinching the world championship title.

Russell currently sits second in the standings on 242 points, but trails Antonelli by 123 points with only five rounds remaining. Meanwhile, the margins behind him are razor-thin, with just nine points covering Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc.

Speaking to the media in Austin, Russell made it clear that his sole focus is on the team's ambitions: "For me, the main goal is to win the constructors' championship. For the team, of course, it would be great to finish as best of the rest, but whether you finish second, third, or fifth makes no difference at all because you're not the champion."

For Russell to drop three positions in Mexico, Hamilton needs to outscore him by two points, Verstappen by seven, and Leclerc by ten. Lando Norris also remains in the hunt, despite sitting 31 points adrift of the Mercedes driver.
