Samsung has announced the postponement of its new product, the Galaxy Note7, in Nigeria.
This postponement comes on the heels of disturbing reports about batteries overheating and/or exploding, causing burns and property damage after it was launched in the United States on August 7.
This has led to Samsung’s voluntary recall of all Galaxy Note7 devices that had been purchased before September 15, 2016, as a result of the security risk they posed, offering an exchange or refund to customers. Samsung had sold 2.5 million devices worldwide at the time of the recall announcement.
The United States government also issued a notice through Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The notice read, “Consumers should immediately stop using and power down the recalled Galaxy Note7 devices purchased before September 15, 2016. Contact the wireless carrier, retail outlet or Samsung.com where you purchased your device to receive free of charge a new Galaxy Note7 with a different battery, a refund or a new replacement device.”
News of the postponement must have come as a blow to Nigerians who had been waiting to get their hands on the device. The announcement was made on the company’s Samsung Mobile Nigeria Instagram page, and it asked customers that might be in possession of the device to report to its nearest service centers while the company works on the problem.
