Unlike most drivers and team personnel who took flights to Singapore, the stage for round 17 of the Formula 1 World Championship this coming Sunday, Valtteri Bottas chose an unconventional mode of transport to reach the next stop on the motorsport calendar: by bicycle.

The Cadillac driver set himself the personal challenge of covering the roughly 350 kilometres between Sepang—the circuit that hosted the chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia—and the city-state of Singapore on a gravel bike.

The journey began shortly after the Finnish driver's race retirement, having spun off on lap seven of the Malaysian event won by Max Verstappen. The two-time world championship runner-up (in 2019 and 2020) logged the opening 56 kilometres on Sunday itself, sharing his ride data on Strava.

At 37, Bottas is widely regarded as the most dedicated cyclist on the Formula 1 grid. The Finn has showcased his cycling credentials on numerous occasions, even competing at the 2024 UCI Gravel World Championships, and is a regular fixture supporting his partner, professional cyclist Tiffany Cromwell, at her races.
