Barcelona has announced that Frenkie de Jong is suffering from a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee. The Dutch international revealed that the injury worsened during the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico due to a misjudgment by the Netherlands' medical team.

In an Instagram post, the player indicated that surgery is not currently being considered. It was there that he shared his doubts regarding the Dutch medical staff.

"During the World Cup, I injured my knee. After the initial examinations, the doctors told me it was a minor injury and that it wouldn't worsen if I continued to play," he wrote.

However, upon his return to Spain, the diagnosis proved to be much more serious, as the footballer further explained on his social media profile.

"I returned to Barcelona for further tests. These showed that the injury was more severe than initially determined," the Dutchman continued.

The Spanish champions will officially kick off their season on August 23 with an away match against Elche in the first round of La Liga. It is almost certain they will have to cope without their key midfielder, who, as has become clear, will be sidelined for several months.
