Tomas Berdych breezes into second round
Tomas Berdych powered into the second round of the French Open with a dominant straight-sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka.
Fourth seed Berdych came into the second grand slam of the year on the back of an impressive clay-court season that has seen him reach the final in Monte Carlo and the semi-final Madrid.
And he needed just an hour and 48 minutes to crush the teenage Japanese qualifier 6-0 7-5 6-3 on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
World number 146 Nishioka is ranked 142 places below Berdych and the gap in quality was immediately apparent as the 2010 Wimbledon finalist wrapped up the first set in less than 30 minutes.
Nishioka's resistance was stronger in the second set and he even had a chance to break Berdych for a 2-1 lead.
However, he was made to pay for spurning that opportunity, Berdych breaking in the final game of the set.
And Berdych - who racked up 32 winners - had no plans to make the final set as close.
Nishioka saved three break points in the second game but could not replicate the feat as he was broken in the eighth before an errant forehand ensured victory for Berdych.
Berdych will likely be given a tougher test in the second round, where he will face Ivan Dodig or Radek Stepanek.
