As France prepares for the third-place playoff at the North American World Cup, behind the scenes, the French Football Federation is gearing up for the arrival of Zinedine Zidane. This Saturday will mark Didier Deschamps' final match at the helm of Les Bleus, bringing an end to his remarkably successful 14-year tenure as national team coach.
Zinedine Zidane is widely expected to succeed him, though an official announcement won't be made immediately after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. It is anticipated to come towards the end of next week. According to French media, all terms regarding Zidane's contract have been agreed upon, but the contract itself has not yet been signed.
The French Football Federation aims to have the contract signed before July 21st. After this date, a new law will come into effect, imposing a salary cap on sports executives and national team coaches, limiting their annual earnings to no more than €450,000. However, this will not pose an issue for Zidane and his staff. French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari has already approved an exemption from the new law specifically for the legendary figure.
