Formula 1 is set to decide on the final two rounds of the 2026 season no earlier than mid-September. Any potential replacement races would be held in Europe to avoid further clashes with the National Football League (NFL) season in the United States.

Races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were postponed in April due to the conflict with Iran. A recent attempt to reschedule one of them for early October failed because of ongoing instability in the region. This led to the Bahrain Grand Prix being moved to Malaysia, and now the focus is on whether the season-ending races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi can proceed as planned.

“Regarding the end of the season, we are in contact with all other championships, and I know, for example, that the World Endurance Championship (WEC) has announced they will not travel to the Middle East at the end of the year and will remain in Europe,” stated Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali. “Our approach is to give ourselves maximum time to see how the situation develops. We will make the decision at the right moment. That moment will not come before mid-September. As of today, the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are confirmed – tickets for them are already sold out. This is an incredible sign of how big the sport is compared to the problems our world is experiencing. But, of course, if the situation doesn't clear up as we believe it should by mid-September, we will make a decision. In this regard, I just want to assure you that if it's not possible, the end of the season will be in Europe because we cannot go to other places. So the finale will eventually be in Europe. There are several options on the table. I don't think it's right to make promises or predict circumstances, but that's the situation today. So, even though I truly hope it doesn't come to that, if the situation doesn't allow us to be there, we will finish the championship in Europe. I can definitely guarantee you that we will not have another race in the USA,” the Italian added.

According to various sources, the two most likely European hosts for an additional race are Portimão in Portugal and Imola in Italy. Both circuits have their pros and cons regarding organizing such an event on short notice, and Formula 1 is yet to decide which option it will pursue.
