Former Real Madrid Chief: "We See Goals and Exceptional Players, Yet the Talk Is Always About Referees"
Former Real Madrid player and director Jorge Valdano has voiced his growing frustration with the relentless debate surrounding refereeing decisions after every major La Liga matchday. The Argentine feels that the quality of the game, stunning goals, and memorable moments are being overshadowed by drama and controversy.
"I'm getting tired of it all, I really am. We see great goals, we see world-class players performing at the highest level, but in the end, the conversation always turns back to the referees. Football takes a back seat. Everything revolves around the officiating," Valdano said.
He pointed out that the entire focus of those involved seems directed solely toward refereeing disputes. From the opening whistle, supporters in the stands directed chants at La Liga president Javier Tebas, as well as referencing Spain's ongoing Negreira case scandal.
"From the very first minute, the chants from the fans were aimed at Tebas, at Negreira, and at the match officials. Then, straight after the final whistle, Sevilla's manager complained about the referee in a bid to justify his team's defeat," the Argentine explained. On Sunday night, Real Madrid cruised to a 4-1 victory over Sevilla featuring fine goals from Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé, and new signing Yan Diomande. However, the Andalusian boss voiced strong complaints about the officiating, particularly concerning a 22nd-minute incident at 0-0 where Güler caught Gerard Fernández in the face, which went unpunished by the match officials.
