The wife of Joe Thompson, a former Manchester United academy player who passed away in April 2025, has given birth to the couple's child, a year after his death. The birth was made possible through an in vitro fertilization process using frozen embryos.
Joe Thompson, a native of Bath, England, was a promising talent in the Red Devils' academy before forging a career in lower league clubs. He left a particular mark at Rochdale, where he played over 200 games across League One (106 appearances) and League Two (115 appearances) of English football.
The former player battled three cancers, with the first diagnosis coming in 2013. He ultimately succumbed to the disease in April 2025. At the time of his passing, Manchester United remembered him as a "radiant personality" who "perfectly embodied the club's values."
The story is made even more poignant by the fact that Thompson's partner, Chantelle, had suffered a miscarriage just days before Joe's death. Despite the tragedy, the couple never lost hope, and Thompson even suggested a name for their future child.
Chantelle revealed that in late March, when she was 25 weeks pregnant, she received an email containing the baby's gender. She chose not to open it, waiting to share the moment with her husband's family, later confirming that Joe's intuition was correct.
Despite her grief, the former player's partner finds strength in the birth. "I try to look at the positives. Don't get me wrong, there are moments when I think, 'Why us? Why don't the girls have their dad? Why did we go through all of this?'" she shared on social media.
However, she emphasized the significance of this moment: "It means absolutely everything to him. I know it will never replace Joe, obviously. Joe is Joe. But to be able to give birth to another one of his children is something magnificent."
