Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton will start side-by-side on the front row for the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, marking the first time the grid has lined up this way since the dramatic and controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi finale.

Red Bull's Dutch driver proved unstoppable in qualifying, claiming his first pole position of the season and a historic first for the team's new power unit as Formula 1 made its return to the Malaysian circuit.

Right alongside him will be Hamilton, who extracted everything from his Ferrari to emerge as his closest challenger. The two world champions—who boast a combined 11 titles, 177 wins, 341 podiums, 154 pole positions, and 267 front-row starts—have not locked out the top two spots in this exact order since the 2021 season decider at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Although the pair have shared the front row since that showdown—including in Hungary in 2023, when the Briton edged Verstappen by three-thousandths of a second—the 1-2 configuration with the Dutchman on pole and Hamilton in second has not occurred in nearly five years.

This marks the 15th time in their careers that both drivers have locked out the front row, with their head-to-head battle for top spot finely poised at 8–7.
