FG issues flood alert for 14 states as heavy rainfall is forecasted
The Federal Government has recently issued a flood alert, warning residents of 14 states and 31 communities in the country to prepare for heavy rainfall that may result in flooding.
This alert is in effect from July 4 to July 8, 2023, according to a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Environment.
The flood-prone states and communities mentioned in the statement are Plateau, which includes Langtang and Shendam; Kano, with Sumaila and Tudun Wada affected; Sokoto, encompassing Shagari, Goronyo, and Silame; and Delta, specifically Okwe.
Additionally, Kaduna State's Kachia, Akwa Ibom's Upenekang, Adamawa's Mubi, Demsa, Song, Mayo-Belwa, Jimeta, and Yola, and Katsina's Katsina, Jibia, Kaita, and Bindawa have been identified as areas at risk of flooding.
The flood alert also highlights Kebbi's Wara, Yelwa, and Gwandu; Zamfara's Shinkafi and Gummi; Borno's Briyel; Jigawa's Gwaram; Kwara's Jebba; and Niger's Mashegu and Kontagora as locations susceptible to heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
To mitigate the potential loss of lives and property, the government has called upon relevant stakeholders in the affected states to take necessary precautionary measures.
