Fermín Aldeguer is set to undergo surgery in Barcelona in the coming days after sustaining an injury during an early crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
The Spaniard, who claimed victory at Mandalika a year ago, went down at the end of the second lap while running among the lead group. While the incident initially did not appear severe, Gresini Ducati confirmed a few hours after the race that he had suffered an injury requiring surgical intervention.
"Fermín Aldeguer sustained a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of his right hand and will require surgery. The Spaniard will fly to Barcelona tonight and will be operated on by MotoGP Medical Director Dr. Ángel Charte," Gresini Ducati said in a statement.
The setback puts Aldeguer's participation in the upcoming MotoGP rounds in serious doubt, starting with the Australian Grand Prix in two weeks. Marc Márquez suffered a similar injury at the beginning of the 2023 season, which kept him sidelined for a month and a half. A comparable recovery timeline would see Aldeguer miss the upcoming triple-header in Australia, Malaysia, and Qatar, with an eye on returning for the Portuguese Grand Prix on November 20–22.
