Federer cruises into Wimbledon last eight with win over Robredo

Roger Federer continued his quest to regain the Wimbledon title in fine fashion as he overcame Tommy Robredo to reach the quarter-finals.

The Swiss was at his free-flowing best on Court One at the All England Club, dispatching the Spaniard 6-1 6-4 6-4 in one hour and 34 minutes.

Federer's last grand slam title came at Wimbledon two years ago but he has been stuck on 17 slam crowns ever since.

He is, however, showing all the hallmarks of a champion in the tournament so far this time around and dismissed Robredo with some ease on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old has yet to drop a set at this year's championships, with his grass-court pedigree coming to the fore in a 12th career meeting with Robredo.

It was the Spaniard who had won the previous encounter in the same stage of last year's US Open, but Federer was quick to exert his dominance on this occasion.

It took the fourth seed just 21 minutes to wrap up the first set, with Robredo's failure to find any sort of consistency on serve proving pivotal.

Indeed, Robredo won just 59 per cent of his points on his first serve, and Federer rarely missed an opportunity to take advantage, striking in the opening game of the second set to take complete control of the contest.

Robredo's resistance was more sustained in the third, the world number 22 even forcing Federer to face his first break point of the tournament.

However, the 23rd seed had no answer for the precision hitting of Federer, who racked up 41 winners on his way to a victory that sets up a last-eight clash with compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka following his win over Feliciano Lopez.
